CHAPTER 5

Sarah

I woke up feeling refreshed. It had been a while since I’d had such a good night’s sleep. I opened my eyes slowly expecting to find Rob next to me, but he was nowhere to be seen. I found myself sitting up quickly, and glanced around the room. I was alone. I felt a little wave of panic when I realized that he must have gone downstairs and that he’d left me to walk through the house alone, but I tried to swallow it down when I realized how silly it sounded to be upset over something like that.

I pushed the soft sheets away from my body and swung my legs around so that my feet hit the soft carpet below them. I listened out to see whether I could hear anybody moving around outside of the room, but there wasn’t a sound to be heard. I reached over to the small pile of my clothes that I’d made the night before and got dressed. I’d left my luggage downstairs so I had to pull on the stale vest top that I’d worn the night before.

I forced myself to get up and go downstairs when I was dressed. I knew that if I hung around for too long in his room, then I’d end up too scared to come out. I opened the door cautiously and looked down the hallway, before I stepped out and softly shut it behind me. I could hear the sound of pans being moved around in the kitchen and I decided to follow the noise in the hopes that I’d find Rob along the way.

I pushed open, the light wooden swinging door that led into what I assumed was the kitchen. I stood by the door a minute, unsure about whether to go any further when I saw Rob and Lucy in what looked like a heated discussion. “Do you want me to come back later?” I asked, as I took a step backwards.

“No, come in. Breakfasts going to be ready in a minute,” Rob said with a smile when he turned around and saw me standing nervously by the door. “Lucy was just leaving anyway. It’s not like she actually eats,” he said snidely.

I couldn’t help but let my eyes drift down to Lucy’s tiny waist that seemed to confirm what her brother had just said about her. “You don’t have to leave on my account,” I said quickly, so that she wouldn’t have any more reason to hate me than she already did.

“I wouldn’t want to stay if you paid me,” Lucy said, as she looked between Rob and I with a look of disgust in her eyes.

“Do you want to come over and sit down?” Rob asked cheerfully as he ignored the last thing his sister had said.

“Sure,” I said quickly, as I walked over to him and sat down at the huge, rounded table that was in the middle of the rustic farm-themed kitchen.

I heard Lucy huff, before she turned and walked out of the kitchen.
